Chapter Sixteen

The Convergence

Raven-haired and pale-skinned, Elequaria Talval—the elven Earth Mage and representative of the Kindred Council—held her hand up high above her head, and the room fell quiet.

“I’d like to begin now,” she said. “The Convergence takes time, as we all well know. And we want to get it right.”

Elequaria was seated at one side of a long conference table, alongside two men, one representing the Federated Council and the other representing the Societal Council. The seven Directors of Doceox and a total of ten Flames—the heads of the ten Orders—were seated on the opposite side.

“Let me begin by saying thank you,” Elequaria said. “Thank you for overseeing another Convergence, and for leading this group of Neolytes into the fold. May we do it well.” She gestured toward a tall, broad-shouldered woman with dark-brown skin and a cleanly shaven head. “Rasmussen. As the head of the Flames of Order One, you may start.”

“Thank you, Elequaria.” Rasmussen smiled. “All right, we can start with the straightforward cases. First of all, Kristopher Jackson. Recommended Spire: Mentis. Recommended Mentor: Han Zavala. Would anyone like to challenge these recommendations?”

The room was silent.

“Excellent,” said Rasmussen. “Next is Alina Kol. Recommended Spire: Corporis. Recommended Mentor: Merellen Benorin. Any challenges to that?”

Again, no one in the room said a word.

“Good.” Rasmussen said. “That brings us to Naomi Delevan. Her Mentor seems clear—that should be Everzander Carlos—but her Spire is a more difficult question. It’s either Visus or Impetus, but there is no clear winner between them, as far as I’m concerned.”

“If I might interject for a moment,” said Mai, raising her hand. “I believe that Apprentice Delevan belongs with Impetus Spire. Based on her propensity toward Flight, I think it’s clear what her destination should be—although I’ll acknowledge that her ability in this area is largely latent at this point.”

“I agree, in part,” said the Director of Visus, Cassandra Mashhad, a very short woman with long brown hair tied back in a single braid. “Apprentice Delevan has the potential to become a talented Flyer, yes, but let’s not allow that to obscure her most obvious talent in Viewing. My understanding is that she witnessed the world through the eyes of a housecat during her Lighting ritual. A housecat, Mai. During her Lighting.”

“She levitated as well, Cassandra. Two feet off the chair.”

Cassandra stared. “At her Lighting? This is true?”

“So I’m told.”

“I see,” Cassandra said. “Well then, we do have a dilemma here. This isn’t a simple case.”

“Agreed.” Mai nodded curtly. “However, for me, it comes down to a matter of degrees. While Apprentice Delevan may show some talent in Viewing, she is uniquely gifted in the Physical arts. I believe she could go further with me than she could possibly go anywhere else. With me, the child will fly, Cassandra. Do you understand the significance of this?”

“She will fly with me as well, Mai. Through the eagle’s eyes. Among others.”

“It’s not the same.”

“Agreed,” Cassandra said. “But it is no less valuable. No less important. No less beautiful.”

“Excuse me,” Elequaria interjected, raising her hand.
